The Challenge
Comfort expectations were evolving far beyond traditional cushioning and fit. A global footwear brand wanted to understand how new technologies, materials, wellness behaviors, and consumer expectations could redefine comfort, without compromising the protection and durability demanded by physically intensive work.
The Approach
I helped lead a two-stage strategy that moved from: Cross-category trend foresight to A future comfort framework to Consumer needs & tensions to Prioritized innovation platforms We first explored emerging expressions of comfort across footwear and adjacent categories, translating a broad signal landscape into a structured framework. We then paired that foresight with ethnographic consumer research to understand how comfort is actually experienced during demanding workdays and where current products fall short. The intersection of the two revealed the strongest spaces for innovation.
The Outcome
The work transformed comfort from a broad product attribute into a strategic innovation system. We identified a focused portfolio of opportunities that helped the organization see where future comfort could be meaningfully differentiated across fit, movement, protection, materials, environmental responsiveness, and emotional experience. The resulting platforms provided clear springboards for product ideation, technology exploration, and concept development.
